Deströyer 666: Defiance
14/07/09 || Euthanatos
While I’ve always been fully aware of Deströyer 666, I don’t think I’ve ever given them the respect and proper attention they deserve. This record is quite an accomplishment for the band, a defining slab of black metal that somewhat maintains the quality of previous records, not as good as some of their heralded material, but still packs a cruel punch to the gonads of Christianity.
In case you’re not familiar with this black metal outfit, even though their sound is gritty and raw, it’s a lot more polished than your average black metal, a lot of that certainly thanks to the thrash and death metal influences that can be heard throughout their song-writing. At times they remind me of a faster Dissection, from the melodic, yet brutally aggressive riffs, right down to the blasphemous lyrics. Their sound is also similar to that of Razor of Occam, which isn’t unreasonable at all, as some members are in both bands. But while Razor is much thrashier, the black/death metal aspect is stronger in Deströyer 666.
For example, while the first track, “Weapons of Conquest” is a killer death metal piece of work, the following track, “I am not deceived”, is undeniably black metal. The band consistently does that, goes back and forth with furiously fast thrash metal, heavy as balls death metal and necrotic diseased black metal. And I say that in the best way possible.
That, I believe, is so much of the appeal of Deströyer 666; there are only good influences and styles to be heard here, and they come together naturally, sounding chaotic, yet making perfect sense. It’s quite pleasing to listen to a band at the top of their game and crafting songs with detail and attention, to the very minute detail.
The musicianship is also fantastic, and I particularly like the vocals, which are aggressive, yet comprehensible, something which is a big plus for me; but the highlight certainly goes to the guitars, which bring forth some of the best riffs in the business. The solos are also surprisingly tasteful, something which naturally distances then from the black metal pack even more.
Plus, did I mention the band leader’s name is Warslut? That’s pretty much the coolest name in the history of metal.
Nothing’s missing here, really, even though they are more melodic than before, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, quite the contrary. I don’t think this album is as good as “Phoenix Rising”, but Deströyer 666 sure gave it one hell of a shot.
People definitely need to pay more attention to Deströyer 666, they’re probably the best band from down under right now and certainly deserve to be on the spotlight a whole lot more. So perk up, fucker, or they’ll come and stick a trident up your ass.
